Zephyring 13 years back, a Woman Crush Always features Selena Gomez and her poptastic new-classic “Slow Down” — the second and final single from her epic, illustrious Stars Dance album.
And 2013 Selena was moving. Stars Dance arrived during the summer she turned 21, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and sent Gomez into her first major solo-pop era without The Scene attached to the billing.
“Slow Down” first appeared as an instant download with the album’s pre-order in June before Hollywood Records pushed it as the official second single in August. It also proved to have more chart life than a quick album-era single. “Slow Down” eventually climbed to No. 27 on the Billboard Hot 100, reached the Top 10 at U.S. pop radio and became a No. 1 Dance Club Songs hit.
Paris After Dark Gave the Video Its Sleekest Look
Directed by Philip Andelman and filmed in Paris in May 2013, the “Slow Down” music video follows Gomez through the city after dark — riding through Paris, walking its streets and hitting a neon-lit nightclub with dancers.
The official video landed online that July, and the whole thing feels very specifically of its moment: glossy, nocturnal, European and just grown-up enough to underline that Gomez was moving into a different chapter of pop stardom.

Stars Dance Was Selena’s First No. 1 Album
The bigger backdrop matters too. Released in the U.S. on July 23, 2013, Stars Dance became Gomez’s first album to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. “Come & Get It” had already cracked the Hot 100 Top 10, and “Slow Down” helped carry the campaign deeper into the year.
There is a reason this era still reads so clearly 13 years later. The production is unmistakably 2013, but “Slow Down” never feels embarrassed by that. It commits completely — sleek synths, hard pop beat, Paris nightlife and all.
