Selena Gomez’s “Same Old Love” Still Sounds Like a Career Turning Point
Eleven years ago, Selena Gomez hit a different gear with “Same Old Love.” Released in September 2015 as the second single from Revival, the track arrived right as Gomez was sharpening the grown-up pop identity that would define the era — less Disney polish, more attitude, more restraint, and a hook that sounded instantly lived-in.
The song was written by Charli XCX, Stargate, Benny Blanco and Ross Golan, with production from Stargate and Blanco. Charli’s fingerprints are especially obvious: her phrasing and vocal style run through the track, and her backing vocals remained in the final version, giving the chorus that unmistakable bite.

“Same Old Love” Was Built Before Selena Ever Recorded It
Like plenty of great pop records, “Same Old Love” had a life before it landed with the artist who made it famous. The song circulated before Gomez recorded it, with reports linking it to other major pop acts during the development process. What matters most in the finished version is how completely Selena made the song fit Revival — cool, slightly detached, bruised without becoming melodramatic.
That fit helped make it one of the album’s defining singles. “Same Old Love” debuted at No. 43 on the Billboard Hot 100, then steadily climbed as radio, streaming and live performances pushed it deeper into the mainstream.
The American Music Awards Gave the Song Another Big Push
After Gomez performed “Same Old Love” at the 2015 American Music Awards, the song jumped from No. 13 to No. 11 on the Hot 100 the following week. Sales rose 74% to 81,000 copies, making it the biggest sales beneficiary of any performance from that year’s ceremony.
The momentum kept going. “Same Old Love” eventually reached No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100, tying “Good for You” as Gomez’s highest-charting single at the time. It also made Revival her first album to produce multiple Hot 100 top-10 singles — a pretty clean sign that the era was not just an image reset. It was working commercially too.
Why “Same Old Love” Still Feels So Specifically 2015
There is something wonderfully mid-2010s about the whole thing: the clipped production, the restrained verses, the pop-star reinvention narrative, the giant chorus that never needs to scream. It is polished, but not shiny. Dramatic, but not overloaded.
And that is probably why it has aged better than a lot of songs from the same pop cycle. “Same Old Love” never depended on one giant EDM drop or novelty production trick. It lets the hook do the work — and eleven years later, that hook is still doing exactly that.
