Ramapo’s Feathered Fugitive Took Police on a Wild Chase

Woopsies! Rockland County, New York, had an unauthorized delinquent strolling dem concrete-jungle streets.
A runaway emu broke free from a local petting zoo in the Town of Ramapo at about 8:45 a.m. on September 12, sending officers into one of the least expected pursuits of their careers. The very tall suspect was quickly located. Convincing it that the adventure was over? That took a little more teamwork.

The Town of Ramapo Police Department deployed its Skydio Drone as First Responder to follow the flightless fugitive from above while patrol officers coordinated on the ground. Drone footage caught the emu trotting through the neighborhood seemingly unbothered by the fact that an entire police operation had formed around its morning walkabout.
“We don’t know why the chicken crossed the road, but the emu crossed the road because Sgt. Anton didn’t give it an option.”
Sgt. Anton and the responding officers eventually got the oversized escape artist safely under control and escorted it back to the petting zoo. The department confirmed that nobody was injured, no property was damaged and—mercifully for the emu—no citation was issued.
So the fugitive’s unauthorized tour of Ramapo ended peacefully, although police could not confirm whether another breakout is already being plotted. For now, the emu is back where it belongs after learning the hard way that it can outrun a few humans, but not the eye in the sky.
