Nothing — Not Even Waist-Deep Floodwater — Was Stopping This Wedding
Woopsies! A little waist-deep floodwater was apparently not enough to cancel one very determined wedding in Hagonoy, Bulacan.
Leian Lieza Galang and Gilbert Chico went ahead with their wedding at St. John the Baptist Parish on September 1, 2026, even as weeks of unusually heavy monsoon rains left the Catholic church partially submerged.
And when we say flooded, we are not talking about a little water around the church steps. The aisle itself was under murky floodwater reaching as high as the waist on some of the people making their way through it.
The parish had advised the couple to postpone because water levels from upstream were continuing to rise. They declined. The wedding was happening.
The result was a shortened late-morning ceremony with fewer than 15 guests. The power was also out, with the church reportedly relying on a portable speaker to keep things moving.
Galang even had the train of her wedding dress shortened so she could navigate the water more safely. She arrived at the church aboard an elevated motorized tricycle before stepping into the flood and making her way toward the altar.
Wedding photographer Mikko Rey Alfonso told AFP it was his first time witnessing a flooded wedding at the parish. He said church workers did what they could to make the ceremony special after the couple made clear they intended to see it through.
One especially wild image from the day showed the young ring bearer walking down the flooded aisle with water reaching his waist. That child deserves his own reception plate and then some.
The Hagonoy Wedding That Refused to Wait for the Water
The couple and their small group of guests pushed through the submerged parish for the abbreviated ceremony.
For better, for worse, for richer, for poorer — and apparently for however high the floodwater gets. They wanted to get married on September 1, and September 1 it was.
