One of those stories that are made for a TV movie.

Michael Goessling always knew he was adopted. Raised in St. Louis by Paul and Kay Goessling, he describes his childhood as a happy one and says he could not have handpicked finer people to raise him. Still, one question followed him for decades: who were his biological parents?

Goessling was placed for adoption as an infant in the mid-1960s, around 1966–67, after his biological parents conceived him when they were both just 14 years old. The exact adoption year was not specified in First Alert 4’s report, but the timeline places his birth and adoption in that period.

The answer arrived through one of those modern family-history twists nobody could have scripted better. A half-brother Goessling did not know existed took a 23andMe DNA test and received a match identifying Michael Goessling as a half-brother in St. Louis. From there, the mystery that had lasted most of Goessling’s life began unraveling fast.

On his 58th birthday, Goessling met his birth mother in person. Later came the phone call with his biological father.

As the two men got acquainted, Goessling asked what his father did for a living. The answer: musician. Then came word that he would soon be touring through St. Louis. Finally, Goessling asked the question that suddenly made the whole conversation feel surreal: was he talking to Michael McDonald?

“Yeah, I’m afraid so,” McDonald replied.

And then came one more almost-too-perfect twist: father and son were both named Michael. There was no secret naming clue hiding in plain sight, either — First Alert 4 reported that the matching first names were completely coincidental.

Yes, that Michael McDonald — the unmistakable voice behind The Doobie Brothers classics including “What a Fool Believes” and a solo catalog that includes “I Keep Forgettin’ (Every Time You’re Near)”.

McDonald told First Alert 4 that he and Goessling’s biological mother had remained close over the years and continued to wonder what had happened to the son they placed for adoption. Learning that Goessling had been loved, supported and given a good life brought an enormous sense of relief. McDonald called Goessling’s adoptive parents “the real rock stars in this story.”

When father and son eventually met in person, Goessling said McDonald opened his arms, gave him a huge bear hug and told him he loved him. Goessling told him the same.

And there was another surprise waiting for McDonald: Goessling has children of his own, meaning the singer also discovered he was a grandfather. McDonald admitted that part was still sinking in, later calling back to praise his new daughter-in-law and grandchildren.

For Goessling, the story also became something larger than discovering a famous name in the family tree. He spoke warmly about the parents who raised him and described adoption as a wonderful option — a reunion story that managed to make room for both the family he was born into and the family that gave him his life.

Goessling is also set to tell his story in person as a keynote speaker at the REACH Reproductive Health gala on October 22 at The Factory in Chesterfield.
