A Spoonful of Whimsy: Who’s howling before sunrise in San Diego?

A Spoonful of Whimsy: Who’s howling? Well, it’s a pack of wild coyotes putting on one rather loud early-morning concert outside a San Diego neighborhood.
The chorus erupted before sunrise on September 13, loud enough to wake nearby residents and send at least one home security camera straight into nature-documentary mode. Resident Ashley King, who captured the moment, told Storyful that the howling was so loud they initially weren’t even sure what they were hearing.

And while a full coyote choir at that hour can sound like the beginning of something far more dramatic, the noise itself is very much normal coyote business. They use howls, yips and barks to communicate, and they are especially active around dusk and dawn.
Southern California coyotes have also become remarkably good at making suburban neighborhoods part of their normal range. That means the occasional late-night sighting — or in this case, an entire vocal ensemble — is not nearly as unusual as it sounds at 5-something in the morning.
Still, there is something wonderfully eerie about hearing several of them answer each other in the darkness while the rest of the block is trying to sleep. Coyotes can also make a small group sound much larger than it actually is, which only adds to the whole what exactly is outside? effect.
