Now get thee entire full stripped-back demo of one of the cornerstone songs on Amy’s pioneering, trailblazing, multi-Grammy-winning Back to Black.
The newly released version pulls “Tears Dry On Their Own” back toward its earlier shape, exposing more of the song before the familiar final production took over. It is less polished by design, more intimate in feel, and exactly the kind of archival listen that reminds you how much of Winehouse’s power was already sitting there before the record was fully dressed.

“Tears Dry” shows the song before the Motown-sized glow-up
“Tears Dry On Their Own” ultimately became one of the most recognizable songs in Winehouse’s catalogue, but this alternative demo lets us hear the writing from a different angle. The song was written in Miami with producer Salaam Remi, and the anniversary campaign describes this version as an early, stripped-back demo.
That matters because the finished “Tears Dry On Their Own” is such a perfect contradiction: heartbreak delivered with bright, classic-soul momentum. Hearing the song in a more exposed form shifts the weight back toward the lyric and Amy’s phrasing.
The Back to Black vault is opening wider for the 20th anniversary
The 20th-anniversary edition of Back to Black arrives October 23, 2026, just days before the album’s original October 27, 2006 release anniversary.
Alongside the original album, expanded editions bring together B-sides, bonus tracks and demos including “Back to Black (Original Demo),” “Love Is a Losing Game (Original Demo),” “Some Unholy War (Down Tempo)” and this newly spotlighted “Tears Dry (Alternative Demo).” A live set from Amsterdam’s Paradiso in February 2007 is also part of the larger anniversary package.
The deluxe campaign also reaches beyond audio. Anniversary editions include previously unseen photography by original album photographers Mischa Richter and Alex Lake, plus new liner notes from Mark Ronson and Salaam Remi.
Twenty years later, the demos make the masterpiece feel newly unfinished
That is the real thrill here. Back to Black has been dissected, streamed, covered, reissued and canonized for years, but hearing Winehouse at an earlier stage in the process temporarily removes some of that museum-glass distance.
For a few minutes, “Tears Dry” is not yet one of thee cornerstone songs from one of the biggest albums of its era. It is simply Amy in the room with the song — and that is more than enough.
