Gatlinburg’s Most Unbothered Pedestrian Has Four Paws and Zero Urgency
Get a spoonful of whimsy from one very fuzzy Tennessee pedestrian who apparently had places to be and absolutely no intention of rushing. A black bear was spotted casually crossing a busy street in downtown Gatlinburg, Tennessee, while tourists did the sensible thing and moved out of its way.
The moment was captured on September 1, 2026, by Jenn Marshall, who told Storyful that she and her husband had just parked and were walking toward Shamrock Pub when they noticed the bear. The extra comedy? Marshall had spent the day hiking without seeing a bear — only to find one taking an evening stroll right through town.

Smoky Mountain Main Character Energy
Gatlinburg sits right beside Great Smoky Mountains National Park, where black bears are part of the landscape — even when they occasionally wander somewhere much more urban than expected.

The Bear Was Calm. The People Following It Were the Bigger Problem.
Marshall’s reaction to the sighting was funny, but she also made a serious point: she wished people would stop chasing and feeding bears, behavior she said contributes to bears coming into town. Gatlinburg’s own BearWise guidance says the same thing in much less whimsical terms — never feed or approach bears, secure food and garbage, and give the animal a clear escape route.
Great Smoky Mountains National Park likewise warns visitors to keep their distance. Inside the park, intentionally approaching within 50 yards of a bear — or getting close enough to disturb one — is prohibited. If a bear is aware of you, the guidance is to back away slowly and never run.

Still, from a respectful distance, the footage is peak A Spoonful of Whimsy: one giant fuzzy local crossing downtown as if the sidewalks, nightlife and confused tourists were simply part of the usual commute.
Moment of zen achieved. Everybody else can resume panicking now.
