New Orleans Has A Mother Crow With Main Character Energy
New Orleans already knows how to turn everyday sidewalk life into theater, but this time the scene-stealer appears to be a very protective mother crow with no interest in letting passersby move through her block peacefully.
The local bird has reportedly been screeching, swooping, and making contact with residents near a popular New Orleans area, and a NOLA.com/The Times-Picayune reporter caught the drama on camera while walking through the neighborhood.
The clip is funny because it has all the ingredients: a journalist trying to stay calm, a neighborhood legend with wings, and one crow who seems to be saying, in no uncertain terms, “wrong sidewalk, babe.”
And while the phrase “terrorizes locals” is deliciously dramatic, the science behind the spectacle is a little sweeter. Crow swooping is often connected to nesting season and protective parenting, when adult birds are warning perceived threats to back away from their young.
That does not make it less startling when a crow comes in hot from above. It simply means the bird may be less villain and more single mom defending the family perimeter with full aerial commitment.
Crows also have a reputation for remembering faces, sharing information, and reacting strongly when they decide a person, dog, or entire sidewalk route has crossed into “absolutely not” territory. So yes, New Orleans may have a new tiny local celebrity. She just happens to travel by wing and conduct interviews by dive-bomb.
Our advice? Respect the crow, protect the baby bird zone, and maybe take the long way around if the neighborhood’s unofficial feathered security guard is already posted up.
