A Black Bear Got Close. This Man Barely Broke His Stride.

Present Day Developments: an older man in British Columbia appears to have looked at a black bear on the sidewalk and decided this simply was not going to become his problem.
The viral footage shows the man walking with the bear close behind him before he turns, gives the animal a firm little wave away and keeps moving. And, incredibly, the bear appears to take the hint and move along. No screaming. No frantic sprint. No attempt to get closer for the world’s dumbest selfie.

Now, before every dum-dum with a phone decides this is proof that black bears are basically oversized neighborhood dogs: do not copy him. The funny part of the clip is how unbothered he looks. The useful lesson is that staying calm is a lot smarter than panicking — but deliberately approaching or crowding a bear is not.
Yes, Staying Calm Helps. No, That Does Not Make Bears Harmless.
British Columbia wildlife guidance says that if you encounter a bear, remain calm, do not run, do not turn your back and slowly create distance while giving the animal a clear escape route. People are also advised not to approach bears and to bring children and pets indoors when possible.
WildSafeBC makes the same larger point: most black bear encounters end with the bear leaving, but that is not an invitation to get casual about one at close range. Bears that become comfortable around humans can create increasingly dangerous situations for people, pets and the animals themselves.
So our original instinct still stands, just with one important correction: respecting wildlife absolutely matters, but there is no guarantee that leaving an animal alone means you’ll automatically be fine. Keep your distance, stay calm, let the bear leave and do not turn the encounter into content.
As for this gentleman? He seems to have handled a very strange sidewalk meeting with the energy of a man telling somebody they are blocking the driveway. The bear apparently agreed.
