Mark your calendars on us: Verona Beach is getting the live-orchestra treatment.
It’s coming. Baz Luhrmann’s William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet is stepping off the screen for its 30th anniversary with a global Film in Concert tour — the full 1996 movie, original dialogue and action intact, while a live hybrid ensemble performs the score and soundtrack in sync.
The whole thing feels almost suspiciously made for this movie. Luhrmann’s Verona Beach was never exactly quiet cinema to begin with: guns branded like swords, neon saints, Catholic iconography, Hawaiian shirts, heartbreak, chaos and one of the most important alternative-pop soundtracks of the ’90s. Now all of that gets a 12-piece live ensemble, vocals, rock and orchestral musicians, electronics and a DJ right there in the room.

And yes, Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes will still be up there breaking hearts at giant scale. The film plays in full while the musicians perform around it, with atmospheric lighting and stage production designed to push the whole thing beyond a standard movie screening.
Luhrmann put the longevity of the film best: “One of the greatest surprises over the past three decades has been watching Romeo + Juliet find new audiences again and again.” He calls that the enduring magic of Shakespeare and cinema — and says the concert is meant to let audiences experience the film’s emotion, music and theatricality in a completely new way.
The calendar starts earlier than the original copy suggested. The world premiere is September 29, 2026 at the Sydney Opera House, followed by the North American run beginning in January 2027 and dates across the U.K. and Europe later in the year. For Los Angeles, mark February 9, 2027 at The United Theater on Broadway. General on-sale for many markets begins September 18, with presales rolling out beforehand.
And the music is obviously half the reason this works. The tour materials specifically call out Des’ree’s “Kissing You,” The Cardigans’ “Lovefool,” Radiohead’s “Talk Show Host” and Garbage’s “#1 Crush” — songs that did not merely decorate the film, but helped define how this version of Shakespeare felt.
Thirty years later, that combination is still doing exactly what Luhrmann says it does: finding another audience. Only this time, when the music swells, it will be happening live in front of you.
