‘Lioness’ Show Fans Astounded To Find Out Jill Wagner Was Iconic TV Host Of ‘Wipeout’ for 6 Seasons

Before Jill Wagner became Bobby on Lioness, she spent six seasons as the on-field host of ABC’s Wipeout, interviewing contestants amid all the obstacle-course chaos.

We are just as surprised. Lioness fans who know Jill Wagner as the disciplined, no-nonsense special operations leader Bobby are discovering that she once spent years standing beside one of the most chaotic obstacle courses on television.

Yep — before the tactical gear, military drills and Taylor Sheridan intensity, Wagner was the on-field host of ABC’s Wipeout, interviewing contestants before and after they hurled themselves across giant red balls, rotating platforms and all manner of gloriously ridiculous contraptions.

Wagner joined Wipeout when the show launched in 2008 and became one of its most recognizable faces. She handled the field-side interviews while John Anderson and John Henson called the mayhem from the booth. After four seasons, Wagner stepped away to focus on acting, then returned for the show’s sixth season and remained through the end of the original ABC run.

So the “six seasons” shorthand fans keep repeating is basically about her total stretch across the series, though not consecutively. She was there for seasons 1 through 4, missed season 5, then came back for seasons 6 and 7. That means her Wipeout résumé really does cover a hefty chunk of the show’s entire life.

And in hindsight, the contrast is hilarious. On Wipeout, Wagner was reacting to people face-planting into foam and water while trying not to laugh too hard. On Lioness, she plays Bobby, a field operative who moves with military precision and looks like she has never once been surprised by anything in her life.

We joked that maybe all those years watching contestants get launched off obstacle courses helped with the body language. Obviously hosting Wipeout is not tactical training, but it does make the career before-and-after feel even more fun once you know the connection.

Wagner’s path between the two shows also makes more sense when you look at the rest of her résumé. She moved steadily into acting, appearing in projects like Teen Wolf, Blade: The Series and the Mystery 101 films before landing in the Taylor Sheridan universe. She is not only part of the Lioness cast — she also serves as an executive producer on the series.

So yes, pop-culture history lesson of the day: Bobby from Lioness used to be the woman standing just off-camera asking soaked contestants what exactly went wrong after they got absolutely demolished by a giant padded obstacle.
