Before All That, Good Burger and SNL, There Was Toto
One of the sweetest parts of the conversation is hearing Kenan talk about what he brought to Toto, one of his earliest childhood roles in a church production of The Wiz. The part had no dialogue, but that apparently did not stop little Kenan from treating the stage like it belonged to him.
That detail feels almost too perfect in hindsight. Long before All That, Kenan & Kel, Good Burger and what would become the longest run by a cast member in Saturday Night Live history, Thompson was already figuring out how to make something memorable even when the assignment did not hand him much to say.

Thompson has told versions of the story before, and it remains ghastly in exactly the way a great old-workplace story should be. Kenan, Amy Poehler, Will Forte and others had been out late, only for production to come calling at an hour when no human being who had just been partying should reasonably be asked to dance in costume.
The sketch was the 2005 Black Eyed Peas parody “1-800-555-PHUNK,” with Thompson playing will.i.am under a set of heavy dreadlocks while everyone involved tried to survive the consequences of the night before. The finished piece may be comedy; the road to getting it on television sounds like punishment.
This is the stuff we want from SNL alumni reunions. Not just “remember when we worked together?” but the deeply specific nonsense — bad wigs, brutal call times, old characters, physical bits and the kind of shared exhaustion that only gets funnier once enough years have passed.

Poehler and Thompson overlapped at Saturday Night Live during a major stretch of the show’s 2000s era, and that history gives the episode its looseness. Amy does not have to introduce Kenan to his own mythology, and Kenan does not have to explain why some absurd little detail from 20 years ago is still funny.
They already know.
That is what makes Good Hang work best: two funny people with enough shared language to skip the formalities and get straight to the stories that would otherwise stay buried in dressing rooms, rehearsal halls and very questionable memories of 6 a.m. production vans.
