Jon Hamm Gets Pulled Into a 63-Hour Hostage Crisis in “American Hostage”

Get ready for more Jon Hamm — and a deeply unnerving Giovanni Ribisi — when MGM+ turns one of Indianapolis’ strangest true-crime stories into the psychological thriller American Hostage.
Premiering September 20, 2026, the series is based on the acclaimed scripted podcast of the same name and takes viewers back to the 1977 Tony Kiritsis hostage crisis, a 63-hour standoff that pulled respected WIBC radio journalist Fred Heckman directly into the story he was trying to cover.
Hamm reprises the role of Heckman after voicing him in the podcast. In the series, Heckman is a trusted Indianapolis radio reporter whose job suddenly becomes dangerously personal when Tony Kiritsis, played by Ribisi, demands access to his popular news program while holding mortgage executive Richard “Dick” Hall hostage.
When the Reporter Becomes Part of the Hostage Negotiation
The real Kiritsis took Hall hostage on February 8, 1977, using a sawed-off 12-gauge shotgun rigged to Hall’s neck with a wire designed to fire if the two men were separated. The crisis quickly became national news.
But Kiritsis also wanted the public to hear his version of events. He repeatedly contacted Heckman, then WIBC’s news director and one of Indianapolis’ most trusted broadcasters. Their conversations became part of the negotiations, putting Heckman in the uncomfortable position of being journalist, confidant and intermediary while a man’s life remained in immediate danger.
Kristoffer Polaha plays Hall, with Mireille Enos, William Jackson Harper, Jonathan Tucker and Kat Cunning also among the cast. The series is directed by Adam Arkin and Nina Lopez-Corrado.
The story has already resurfaced on screen in 2026 through Gus Van Sant’s Dead Man’s Wire, but American Hostage approaches the ordeal from Heckman’s side of the microphone — and Hamm already knows the character from the original audio drama.
American Hostage premieres with its first two episodes on Sunday, September 20 on MGM+.
