Dig out comedian queen Awkwafina’s latest hilarious project, Awkwafina: The Unlikely Cook, an Apple TV production with a rather perfect setup: she wants to bring her family’s restaurant back to life. Now she just needs to learn how to cook.

The eight-episode docuseries follows Nora Lum — aka Awkwafina — on a cross-country culinary road trip as she works toward reviving Lum’s, her family’s Cantonese restaurant legacy in Flushing, New York. Apple puts the central problem rather plainly: Nora inherited the family history, but not the kitchen skills.

Along the way, she heads to the Culinary Institute of America, hits Texas barbecue territory with Jimmy O. Yang, learns from culinary icons Roy Choi and Martin Yan, explores Hawai‘i’s tiki history and eventually tackles restaurant service in Los Angeles’ Chinatown.

And because this is Awkwafina, Apple is not pretending we are watching some overnight transformation into a serene celebrity chef. The whole engine is the gap between the family legacy and her own very blunt admission: “I can’t cook. Like, at all.”
