Funny gal Zarna Garg has a luxury-shopping story that sounds like it was written specifically to become stand-up material: she says she was trapped inside a bathroom at a Hermès store in Berlin for roughly 80 minutes.

The comedian and author says the sliding bathroom door jammed during a visit to the luxury house’s store on Berlin’s Kurfürstendamm. What began as an absurd inconvenience eventually turned into a full rescue situation involving store staff, a crowbar, a blaring alarm and, finally, the Berlin fire brigade.

At First, Even Zarna Garg Thought the Hermès Bathroom Disaster Was Funny

Garg documented the ordeal while it was happening, and early on she still seemed able to find the comedy in it. At one point, she reportedly passed the time making little origami figures from paper towels while people outside tried to figure out how to get the door open.

That mood did not last.

According to Garg, staff first tried to force the sliding door open themselves and asked her to push from inside while they worked from the other side with a crowbar. She later said the situation became frightening because she worried the tool could come through the door and injure her.

The Berlin Fire Brigade Eventually Got Her Out

Garg says her daughter and team pushed for emergency services to be called, while store staff were initially reluctant because of concerns about damaging the door. After approximately 80 minutes, firefighters were called and Garg was finally freed.

Her frustration did not end when the door opened. Garg later accused the store of showing little urgency during the ordeal and said she received no apology afterward.

Hermès, responding to reports about the incident, described what happened as a one-off occurrence. Garg, meanwhile, had already turned the experience into an emergency episode of The Zarna Garg Family Podcast, where she and her family went in on luxury-brand customer service and why shoppers keep accepting it.
