A 1948 Classic Found New Life in Bobby Darin’s Hands
Drop the needle on Bobby Darin’s 1961 version of “Nature Boy,” the haunting eden ahbez composition that had already become pop history through Nat King Cole’s landmark 1948 recording. More than a decade later, Darin stepped into that shadow and made the song his own without sanding away its mystery.
Calling it “the greatest song ever” is naturally a matter of taste—but we understand the impulse. “Nature Boy” has one of those melodies that seems to float outside its era, and Darin’s take gives it a polished early-’60s setting while keeping the song intimate, strange and dreamlike.
Darin recorded “Nature Boy” in Los Angeles on March 25, 1961. Ahmet Ertegun produced the session, with Fred Norman arranging and conducting. The recording paired Darin with a substantial studio ensemble and turned an already-established standard into a sleek new pop single.

Atco released “Nature Boy” as a 1961 single, catalog No. 45-6196, backed with “Look for My True Love.” It entered the Billboard Hot 100 on June 12, 1961 and eventually climbed to No. 40 on the chart dated July 10.
The record also crossed the Atlantic. In Britain, Darin’s “Nature Boy” reached No. 24 on the Official Singles Chart, giving the song another genuine chart run more than a decade after Cole first made it famous.
That longevity is part of what makes “Nature Boy” such an unusual pop object. A song introduced to the mass audience in the late 1940s could still sound at home in Darin’s world in 1961—and later sit comfortably beside recordings from across his rapidly changing career.
Darin’s recording was later collected on the 1962 Atco album Things and Other Things, which brought together material from several different sessions. “Nature Boy” lands there as both a standard revisited and a reminder of how easily Darin moved between pop, swing, standards and the edges of rock ’n’ roll.
