Aaliyah’s Futuristic R&B Classic Still Sounds Like Tomorrow

Back To The Future: Aaliyah’s “More Than a Woman” turns 25, and somehow that Timbaland production still sounds like it was smuggled in from a year we have not reached yet.
The track came from Aaliyah, her self-titled third and final studio album, and its single rollout shifted almost in real time. “More Than a Woman” had originally been lined up to follow “We Need a Resolution,” but “Rock the Boat” began building radio momentum first. Aaliyah pushed for the label to follow what listeners were already responding to, moving “Rock the Boat” ahead while “More Than a Woman” waited its turn.

In early August 2001, Aaliyah filmed the “More Than a Woman” video in Los Angeles with director Dave Meyers and choreographer Fatima Robinson. Meyers built the clip around a futuristic motorcycle concept, sending the camera inside the machine for one of the sleekest visual worlds of Aaliyah’s career. The shoot happened before she traveled to the Bahamas for “Rock the Boat.”
Then everything changed. Aaliyah died on August 25, 2001, after the “Rock the Boat” shoot, leaving her label to figure out how — and when — to continue promoting material that had already been completed. “More Than a Woman” entered its international release cycle beginning in September 2001 and continued rolling out into 2002.
The song eventually reached No. 25 on the Billboard Hot 100 and became even bigger overseas. In January 2002, it went all the way to No. 1 on the UK Singles Chart, making Aaliyah the first woman to score a posthumous UK No. 1. The record would also earn a Grammy nomination for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance.
But charts only tell part of why “More Than a Woman” still works. The real trick is how little it has aged. Timbaland’s clipped rhythm, synthetic low end and strange little mechanical details leave open space around Aaliyah’s vocal instead of swallowing it. She floats through all that machinery completely unbothered — cool, precise and unmistakably herself.
Twenty-five years later, “More Than a Woman” does not need nostalgia to carry it. Put it next to a new R&B record and it still sounds adventurous. That was always Aaliyah’s thing: never screaming about the future, just quietly getting there first.
