From “Heart of Glass” to “No Scrubs” and “Bad Romance,” the songwriting royalty on the ballot

Some songs outlive the moment they were made for. Others remake the moment entirely. The Songwriters Hall of Fame announced its 2027 induction nominees on November 5, 2026, and three names at the top of INYIM’s watch list make a persuasive case for the people who write the music as well as perform it: Blondie’s Debbie Harry and Chris Stein, Kandi Burruss, and Lady Gaga.
They represent different eras and corners of pop, but their catalogs share something deliciously hard to manufacture: songs that refuse to leave the cultural conversation. Harry and Stein and Gaga are up for recognition in the performing songwriters category; Burruss is nominated in the songwriters category, which honors work written for other performers as well as the nominees’ wider output.

Blondie’s Debbie Harry and Chris Stein: A New Wave Legacy That Still Sounds Ahead of Its Time

It’s difficult to imagine modern pop without the doors Debbie Harry and Chris Stein helped kick open. The Hall points to “Heart of Glass,” “Call Me,” “Rapture,” “One Way or Another,” and “Dreaming” as representative songs from their catalog. Punk attitude, disco shimmer, rap-inflected experimentation, and melodies with actual staying power? That combination was never going to fit politely into one genre.
And this isn’t only a legacy moment. Blondie are preparing High Noon, due February 26, 2027, with new single “Spectral Eyes” already introducing their next chapter. A nomination for Harry and Stein just as the band heads toward another album makes for rather splendid timing. Explore Blondie’s official album announcement.
And here’s an especially satisfying Blondie twist: Richard Gottehrer is also on the 2027 Songwriters Hall of Fame ballot, nominated in the songwriter category alongside Bob Feldman and Jerry Goldstein. Gottehrer helped Blondie secure their early recording deal and produced the band’s first two albums, Blondie (1976) and Plastic Letters (1978). That puts Harry and Stein and a pivotal figure behind their earliest recordings in contention in the same year, albeit in separate categories. Read more about Gottehrer’s early work with Blondie.
Kandi Burruss: The Hitmaker Behind a Generation of R&B Anthems

Before a new generation came to know Kandi Burruss through television, she was helping shape the soundtrack of late-’90s and early-2000s R&B. Her nomination highlights the pen behind TLC’s “No Scrubs,” Destiny’s Child’s “Bills, Bills, Bills,” and *NSYNC’s “It Makes Me Ill,” along with “There You Go” and “Don’t Think I’m Not.” These weren’t merely hits; they were songs with phrases, perspectives, and hooks people still know by heart.
Her place in the songwriter category is an especially welcome reminder that some of pop’s most recognizable voices belong to the people behind the scenes—even when those writers are accomplished performers themselves.
Lady Gaga: Pop Provocation With a Songwriter’s Backbone

Lady Gaga has spent years making spectacle look effortless, but the composition is the thing that holds it together. The Hall’s representative selections include “Poker Face,” “Bad Romance,” “Born This Way,” “Shallow,” and “Die With a Smile.” From a dance-floor command to an enormous film ballad, her range is part of the story; so is the fact that listeners can recognize a Gaga song long before they see the costume.
For INYIM, seeing Gaga on the same ballot as Blondie’s songwriting architects offers a particularly satisfying pop-music through line: audacity matters, but writing a song that lasts matters even more.
Who Else Is Nominated—and When Will the 2027 Class Be Decided?
The performing songwriter ballot also features Boy George, Shakira, P!nk, Sia, Ne-Yo, Jack White, Vince Gill, Grandmaster Melle Mel, and members of America, WAR, and ZZ Top. On the songwriter side, nominees include Pete Bellotte, Boy Meets Girl’s George Merrill and Shannon Rubicam, Andreas Carlsson, Maurice Starr, Stock Aitken Waterman, Stargate, will.i.am, Dan Wilson, Tom Douglas, Bob McDill, Toni Wine, and Bob Feldman, Jerry Goldstein, and Richard Gottehrer.
Eligible Hall members can vote for up to three nominees in each of the two categories, with ballots due by midnight Eastern on December 14, 2026. Nomination is not induction; the 2027 class will be announced later. The Hall generally considers songwriters with notable catalogs once 20 years have passed since their first commercially released song.
Whoever makes the final class, this ballot is a reminder that the songs you danced to, cried to, and sang far too loudly in the car started with somebody writing them. And if INYIM had to pick three names to keep a particularly close eye on this year, you already know where we stand: Blondie, Kandi, and Gaga.
