Thirty years later, Goldust and Marlena still own this bizarre Late Night visit
Zephyring 30 Years! The legendary competitive athlete Goldust — who was most definitely a subject and muse at one point during the 1990s for us — brought all that gold straight into Late Night with Conan O’Brien, accompanied by his equally iconic sidekick and “director,” Marlena.
The original appearance aired March 21, 1996, right in the middle of Goldust’s first major WWF run. By then, the character had already become one of wrestling’s strangest, most deliberately provocative creations: platinum wig, gold-and-black face paint, full-body gold gear, movie-star theatrics and enough sexual ambiguity to make mid-’90s wrestling audiences squirm exactly as intended.

Thirty years later, Goldust and Marlena’s wonderfully bizarre 1996 Conan appearance remains peak wrestling-meets-late-night television.

And Marlena was no random accessory. She had arrived alongside Goldust at the 1996 Royal Rumble, where he defeated Razor Ramon for the Intercontinental Championship, and the WWF explicitly billed her as his “director.” Cigar in hand, old-Hollywood glamour turned all the way up, she was the perfect counterweight to Goldust’s theatrical chaos.
Together, they show Conan O’Brien and Andy Richter — with a little help from security — exactly how to bring the sexual cheeky play while never losing the comedy-sketch timing. It is part wrestling character work, part late-night absurdism and part performance art before anybody involved would have bothered calling it that.
What makes it work three decades later is that nobody treats the bit like a novelty cameo that needs explaining. Goldust commits. Marlena commits. Conan and Andy commit. The room simply accepts that this strange golden creature and his impossibly cool director have arrived, and the comedy comes from everybody playing along instead of stepping outside the moment to wink at it.
WWE itself later described Goldust’s early presentation as “envelope-pushing”, and that is exactly what this clip preserves. He was designed to unsettle the hyper-macho wrestling world around him, while Marlena’s cigar-smoking, old-Hollywood styling made the whole act even more surreal. Watching the pair walk that character straight into NBC late night is a beautiful little time capsule of what television could get away with in 1996.
