Bella’s Little Crooked Smile Became a Very Big Kind of Love

A Kind of Love: Meet Bella, a tiny cream dachshund from Tampa, Florida, with one of the most unforgettable smiles the internet ever stumbled across.
Bella’s expression was not a trick, filter or carefully timed pose. Her signature sideways grin came from missing teeth, which gave one side of her mouth that permanently mischievous little lift. By late 2025, photos of the senior dog were traveling far beyond her family’s own social pages, with people sharing her face simply because looking at her made them feel better.

Local coverage from WFTV introduced Bella as a senior dachshund whose smile was spreading joy around the world. Her owner, Melanie Savage, said the family never expected Bella’s unusual expression to attract so much attention, but they were delighted that strangers seemed to love her just as deeply as they did.
And the love was not abstract. Bella lived alongside fellow family pets Buddy, a pit bull, and Birdie, a cat — the trio behind the @buddy_bella_birdie account. Bella was already 14 years old when her grin began reaching a much wider audience in 2025, turning an elderly little dog in Tampa into the face people sent to friends when they needed something uncomplicated and happy.
That is what made the news of her death hit so hard. Bella died in December 2025 after a sudden medical emergency. Her owner later shared that Bella became ill during the night and was rushed to an emergency veterinarian, but despite efforts to save her, she could not recover.

In the message announcing her loss, Melanie described Bella as her “soul dog” and explained that Bella had come to live with her after Bella’s previous owner died. What followed was the kind of bond dog people understand immediately: Bella became the little shadow who followed her everywhere and somehow made herself part of every ordinary moment.
Her audience felt a piece of that connection too. Followers told the family that Bella had helped them through difficult stretches, inspired them to adopt dogs, or simply gave them something to look forward to when another photo of that crooked grin appeared in their feed.
That is why Bella belongs in A Kind of Love. Not because she became internet-famous, but because the fame came from something wonderfully small: an old dog, a funny smile and the feeling that she was happy to see you even through a screen.
Her story did not end when the posts stopped being new. The photos are still shared. The videos still find people who have never met her. Someone still sees that tiny tilted grin for the first time and smiles back.
Thank you, Bella, for all the smiles.
