The Original Influencer Meets an Independent Media Original

Two gals who have been working thee biz for a MINUTE finally collided: Los Angeles billboard queen Angelyne and INYIM founder Anthony De La Cruz, representing It’s Not You It’s Me Media—two independently built names that understand the power of defining yourself before somebody else does it badly for you.
To the world of pioneering, Angelyne means more than a pink Corvette, a gravity-defying blonde cloud and a familiar face floating above Sunset Boulevard. She represents one of Hollywood’s boldest acts of radical self-creation: turning a name, an image and a carefully guarded mystique into a business before the internet gave everybody a profile page and told them to start building a personal brand.
And that is why this meeting between Angelyne and Anthony De La Cruz lands differently. It is not simply a celebrity sighting or a quick social-video cameo. It is one long-running independent identity recognizing another—different scale, different medium, same refusal to wait quietly for a gatekeeper to approve the concept.

Before the Feed, Angelyne Bought the Whole Skyline
Angelyne’s large-scale self-promotion did not begin with a viral post. It began around 1981 with posters placed around Hollywood, followed by the billboards that transformed her from a local performer into part of the city’s visual architecture.
Her first major Sunset Boulevard billboard appeared in 1984 with the message “Angelyne Rocks,” her name and a management phone number. The billboard did not stop to explain a movie, television role or conventional product. The mystery was the invitation. Who was Angelyne? What was she selling? Why was she suddenly larger than the buildings around her?
The answer was Angelyne herself. The image created awareness; the phone number created direct access; the repetition turned recognition into mythology. By the mid-1990s, reports described roughly 200 Angelyne billboards around Los Angeles, with additional bus-shelter advertisements carrying the persona into even more corners of the city.
She did not wait to be discovered. She purchased discovery by thee square foot.
She Did Not Invent Fame, but She Rewired the Sales Model
It would be too broad to say Angelyne single-handedly invented self-promotion, celebrity branding or being famous for being famous. Hollywood had been manufacturing personas long before she parked a pink Corvette beneath her own face.
What Angelyne did was package those mechanics in a form that now looks startlingly modern: a name used as a logo, a recognizable visual code, strategic repetition, direct audience contact, merchandise, paid appearances and carefully controlled access to the person behind the image.
Today, platforms call that an identity system, a creator business or a personal-brand funnel. Angelyne called it Angelyne. She made fame itself part of the product while refusing to give the public enough explanation to separate the woman from the artwork.
That distinction matters. She was not merely “famous for nothing.” She was famous for constructing and maintaining a character so complete that Los Angeles eventually treated it like public infrastructure.
Radical Self-Creation Was Always the Real Blueprint
Angelyne’s influence is clearest in the idea that an individual can build a recognizable cultural identity without attaching it to one traditional job title. Singer, actress, artist, model, political candidate, merchandise seller, billboard queen—none of those descriptions alone explains the whole enterprise.
The enterprise is the identity itself. The pink is not merely a color choice. The Corvette is not merely transportation. The billboards were not merely advertisements. Each piece reinforced the others until the aesthetic became a world people could recognize from across a boulevard.
Long before hashtags and algorithms quantified attention, Angelyne understood that consistency could turn visibility into cultural permanence.
INYIM Recognizes the Blueprint Because It Built Its Own Lane
Since 2009, Anthony De La Cruz and It’s Not You It’s Me Media have followed a very different path through the same basic problem: how do independent creators remain recognizable, original and alive when the media landscape keeps rewarding sameness, scale and whoever already owns the room?
INYIM did it through years of entertainment coverage, music discovery, men’s fashion, vintage culture, original features and an editorial voice that never needed corporate polish to prove it had a point of view. Angelyne did it through Los Angeles streets, giant photographs, hot pink and the confidence to make her own name the headline.
Nobody needs to pretend those histories are identical to understand the kinship. Both demonstrate that a strong identity is not decoration placed on top of the work. The identity is part of the work.
So yes, two gals who have been working the biz for a minute met—and for one perfectly pink collision, Angelyne and Anthony De La Cruz put the blueprint and the independent-media survivor in the same frame.
