Thirty-one years ago, the Jackson siblings stepped aboard a black-and-white spacecraft, screamed back at the noise and pushed music videos straight into the future.

This very June, back in 1995, Janet and Michael Jackson transported us into the future with the short-film premiere for their debut and only full duet, “Scream.”
The single had arrived at the end of May as the lead release from Michael’s HIStory: Past, Present and Future, Book I, but June was when the entire vision landed. The black-and-white visual premiered across MTV, BET and ABC-TV, turning a song about pressure, distortion and media intrusion into a full intergalactic escape.

Written and produced by Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, “Scream” brought the siblings together over a metallic rhythm built to push back against suffocating public scrutiny.
The song arrived with anger, frustration and sibling solidarity. The visual answered with a pristine spacecraft where Michael and Janet could dance, break things, play futuristic games, watch animation and briefly escape the people watching them.

Director Mark Romanek wrapped them in shiny black trousers, sculptural tops and a spotless outer-space environment that still looks modern. The styling, choreography and stark monochrome design made it feel as though someone had suddenly changed what a music video was allowed to be.
For those of us watching in 1995, it felt like pop visuals had jumped an entire decade overnight. Michael and Janet were not simply standing beside each other for a family collaboration. They were meeting as two fully formed superstars with separate movements, attitudes and visual languages.
“Scream” entered the Billboard Hot 100 at No. 5, becoming the first song in the chart’s history to debut inside the Top 5. The short film later earned a record 11 MTV Video Music Award nominations and won the Grammy Award for Best Music Video.

Fourteen years after the original release, Janet returned to the “Scream” choreography during the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, dancing alongside footage of her brother in a tribute that was both explosive and heartbreaking.
The song had originally allowed them to stand together against the outside noise. The tribute transformed it into one final shared stage.
This very June, we remember the moment Janet and Michael Jackson boarded that spacecraft—and transported the rest of us along with them.
