The world’s first purpose-built amusement park is preparing to reopen after years of pandemic-era closure.

Today’s Wednesday Whimsy takes us seaside — where a legendary amusement landmark is preparing for a new chapter.
The Kursaal, widely regarded as the world’s first purpose-built theme park, is getting ready to reopen in Southend-on-Sea, located in Essex.
Originally opening its doors in 1901, the historic seaside entertainment complex stood more than a century ahead of the modern theme park era, welcoming generations of visitors to its vibrant amusements and attractions.
After sitting empty since the disruptions of the COVID-19 pandemic, the iconic property is finally seeing life with new eyes.
A New Chapter for the Kursaal

According to officials from the Southend-on-Sea City Council, the site is now preparing to reopen as a renewed leisure destination.
Ownership of the Kursaal lease will transfer from property firm AEW to Star Amusements by late summer 2026.
The new operators plan to bring the historic venue back to life with:
- arcades
- restaurants
- pubs
- seaside entertainment venues
all designed to restore the Kursaal’s role as a centerpiece of Southend’s waterfront culture.
Once reopened, the venue will reintroduce itself as a modern leisure complex while honoring its long legacy in the evolution of amusement parks.
