There are vacation decisions, and then there is taking a rental electric scooter up a fog-covered Icelandic mountain and discovering the battery has absolutely no interest in bringing you back down.

That is exactly where musician and performer Meg LaGrande found herself in Siglufjörður, Iceland. Wind whipping through her hair and the scooter sitting beside her, she opens the video with the confession: “I actually took one of those electric scooters up in rural Iceland.”

And Meg is not just a random tourist who happened to start filming. Her TikTok profile bills her as a freelance musician behind the BuskHer webseries. Her official bio describes her as a fiddle player, singer and songwriter who grew up in Canada and now lives on Ireland’s west coast, while BuskHer is built around the unpredictable real life of a working musician on the road — touring, travel, performance and whatever chaos happens in between. So yes, turning a dead scooter into a full character-driven adventure is very much on brand.

The plan had apparently been sightseeing. The problem was that LaGrande had taken the little Hopp scooter much farther uphill than your average quick ride around town — and then the battery gave up. She still needed to get back to her ship, but the road around her was nearly empty.

She also knows exactly who deserves the blame. “I did not pay attention and read the instructions,” she admits before surveying the road and delivering the sentence nobody wants to say while traveling alone: “I’m actually in the middle of nowhere.”

Then One Car Finally Appeared

After trying to figure out how she was going to get herself — and the dead scooter — back down, a local man finally stops. LaGrande immediately owns the mistake, apologizing that she “didn’t read the instructions,” and he agrees to help.

The scooter gets loaded into his vehicle, Meg climbs in, and the entire mood changes. She even asks whether he wants to be in her little video. The stranger who stopped is later identified in the clip as Hjalti Hafþórsson, and the ride back unexpectedly becomes part rescue mission, part local tour.

And once she realizes she is actually getting home? Meg basically cackles all the way down the mountain. She’s a character. At one point the fog is so thick that even she laughs about there being “not much of a view at the moment.”

She gets the waterfall she had been trying to find, learns more about the area, and at one point the video even flashes Hjalti Hafþórsson’s art showcase in Siglufjörður. What started as “please help me get off this mountain” has somehow become an accidental sightseeing tour with her rescuer.

Then comes perhaps the funniest confirmation of just how far she pushed the assignment. LaGrande asks, laughing, “No one’s ever taken the scooter all the way up the mountain?”

For context, Hopp’s own Siglufjörður page says the town has just 16 scooters, promoted for quick trips, errands and sightseeing. Meg apparently heard “sightseeing” and chose the mountain.

Then the ship finally comes back into view. The relief is immediate: “There we go. Take me home.”

Back in town, LaGrande gives Hjalti the title he has absolutely earned: “My knight in shining armour.” He poses with the rescued scooter, she gets the thank-you selfie, and both of them look thoroughly entertained by the ridiculous chain of events that brought them together.

TikTok Had Thoughts About the Rescue

The comment section quickly became its own part of the story. One viewer admitted, “I literally would have been panicking, you handled this way better than I would have.” Another simply wrote, “I love this!!! Thanks for making me laugh and smile.”

Then there was the comment that probably deserves to be Hjalti’s epilogue: “You just know he went home and said ‘you’ll never guess what a tourist did today…’”

Not everyone was laughing without reservations. Other viewers pointed out the obvious safety concern: getting into a stranger’s car while stranded somewhere remote can go very differently. This one ended with a kind local, a recovered scooter and a very grateful Meg — but the nerves in the comments were understandable.

Sometimes the travel story you remember most is not the landmark you planned to see. It’s the ridiculous detour, the stranger who saves the day and the fact that somehow you end up laughing harder than you were panicking.
