The beautifully shot video is a moody masterpiece hangover with alternative and pop appeal that is quite difficult to accomplish. Only very few musicians in history have really been able to execute this duality (Annie Lennox, Shirley Manson, Lorde, Christina Aguilera, etc) Thee dark-pop rising pop kitten takes over the character role of the sinister human or monster under the bed.
Billie Ellish herself said about the track to press, "‘Bury a friend’, is literally from the perspective of the monster under my bed. If you put yourself in that mindset, what is this creature doing or feeling? I also confess that I’m this monster because I’m my own worst enemy. I might be the monster under your bed too.”
The album's namesake is actually ripped directly from the tune’s chorus line. “What do you want from me/ Why don’t you run from me/ What are you wondering/ What do you know/ Why aren’t you scared of me/ Why do you care for me/ When we all fall asleep, where do we go?”
The video is quite a yummy bowl of scaringly stellar aesthetics and nuances. Grappling hands dressed in black gloves come for Eilish, pulling her hair and ripping her T-shirt before injecting her in the back with questionable syringes. Billie slowly drags her depleting body through flickering lights in and out of desolate hallways. Levitation and acting possessed is the name of the game in this video's dramatic motif.
When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? is dated to be unleashed March 29th via Darkroom/Interscope Records.
