Zephyring 36 years ago, Janet Jackson unleashed the classic “Love Will Never Do (Without You)” as the 7th single from her ‘Rhythm Nation 1814’ album.
Unveiled in October 1990 as the Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis-produced track shifted away from the project’s heavier social themes into something warmer and more romantic sonics.
It was originally planned as a duet with a male singer, but Janet ended up performing both parts herself, switching between lower and higher registers and turning the arrangement into one of the song’s defining features.
Herb Ritts’ legendary video helped make the song feel like the beginning of a new Janet era rather than just the end of the old one. Shot in a stripped-back desert setting with neutral styling and a more sensual, confident image, it won Best Female Video at the 1991 MTV Video Music Awards and became one of the most memorable visuals of her career
