Ballet Zoom Made Disco Cats a Full-Blown Television Event
Let’s transport back to when all was groovy, television variety shows could get gloriously weird, and apparently nobody in the room thought a psychedelic disco ballet devoted to cats needed further explanation. Get ready to do thee discotech prance.
The clip comes from Ballet Zoom, a Spanish television dance troupe that became part of the visual language of TVE variety shows in the 1970s. Rather than functioning like a conventional standalone ballet company, they worked inside big entertainment programs — performing choreographed numbers, appearing alongside singers and comedians, and helping turn weekly television into a full visual spectacle.
RTVE’s archive places Ballet Zoom across programs including ¡Señoras y señores!, La hora de… and Esta noche fiesta. On La hora de…, which TVE aired from 1975 to 1977, Ballet Zoom was even listed among the program’s presenters as well as its performers. That helps explain the gloriously maximal mix of choreography, costumes, studio effects and variety-show surrealism happening here.
