The performance originally aired during the February 11, 2016 episode of the Spike series, with Panettiere battling Eva Longoria. Hayden had already tackled Blondie’s “One Way or Another,” but for round two she went straight for the razzle-dazzle.
Her choice was the blockbuster 2001 version of “Lady Marmalade” recorded by Aguilera, Lil’ Kim, Mýa and Pink for Moulin Rouge!. Hayden leaned all the way into the song’s maximalist visual world, channeling Aguilera’s famous look from the music video as dancers and a full production surrounded her.
Then came the reveal.
Aguilera appeared from behind a giant feathered fan and joined Panettiere onstage, turning what was already a big celebrity lip-sync number into one of those wonderfully ridiculous television surprises the show was built for.
Hayden and Christina Already Had a Nashville Connection
The surprise guest was not entirely random. Aguilera and Panettiere were also Nashville co-stars. Aguilera appeared in three Season 3 episodes in 2015 as pop superstar Jade St. John, entering the same musical television universe where Hayden had spent years making Juliette Barnes impossible to ignore.
And that is what makes this clip hit differently now. Hayden was an actor first, but she never approached music onscreen like somebody simply waiting for the scene to end. Whether it was Nashville or a gloriously unserious television competition, she understood performance. She committed.
Hair? Enormous. Production? Moulin Rouge fantasy. Subtlety? Absolutely not invited.
She even lost the actual battle to Eva Longoria that night. Somehow that feels almost beside the point. Nearly a decade later, it is Hayden’s “Lady Marmalade” spectacle that still makes you stop scrolling.
