One Routine Uber Pickup Suddenly Turned Into a Houston Police Chase
There are strange nights behind the wheel, and then there is the night Houston Uber driver Anthony Baines became an unexpected part of a police pursuit.
Baines told KPRC 2 he was near E. 7 1/2 Street and Oxford Street in Houston’s Heights neighborhood, about a block away from picking up a passenger, when a shirtless man ran past his vehicle with two Houston Police Department officers chasing behind him. His dash cam was rolling.

Then came the sentence no rideshare driver expects to hear. One officer approached Baines’ car and asked for a ride before directing him toward the fleeing man: “Go, go that way… go go go go go.”
Baines complied, picked up the officers and drove in the direction they indicated. He later described himself as shocked and running on adrenaline, but said he focused on following their instructions in the moment.
Why Houston Police Were Chasing the Man
Houston police confirmed the incident and said officers had responded to a reported terroristic threat. According to HPD accounts reported by KPRC 2 and FOX 26 Houston, a man allegedly threatened to shoot a woman and her children following an altercation connected to his belief that someone had stolen from him.
Police said officers later encountered the man outside an apartment and tried to detain him. He allegedly broke free and ran, setting off the foot chase that crossed paths with Baines.
FOX 26 reported the incident occurred on August 7, 2026. After Baines drove the officers around the block, police transferred into their own vehicle and continued searching. Despite the very improvised assist, HPD said the suspect was not apprehended during the search.
An Uber Ride Nobody Ordered
Baines, an Iraq veteran, told FOX 26 that his military experience helped him stay focused during the sudden, high-stress situation. He had been driving for Uber for about two years and called the encounter the wildest thing he had experienced on the job.
His wife had a more practical reaction: the officers were trained and paid to enter dangerous situations; her husband was not. Baines said his family was relieved he was unharmed but wondered what could have happened if the vehicle had actually caught up with the suspect.
That question is part of what makes the footage so wild. Baines said he did not know what his rights were in the moment, while KPRC 2 reported it had asked HPD about department policy covering officers’ use of a civilian vehicle during a pursuit.
So yes: one minute he was heading toward an Uber pickup. The next, two officers were inside his car directing traffic like it was an action-movie scene nobody had warned him he was auditioning for. Pop-pop history, indeed.
