Seattle’s Roundest New Celebrity Is A Raccoon Named Jimothy
Today’s Present-Day Whimsy Developments arrived from beneath a parked car in Seattle’s Ballard neighborhood—and no, thee tiny fuzzy figure was not a cat, dog or escaped plush toy.
Kiana Hall was walking with her partner near the Ballard Goodwill when she noticed a small gray animal tucked beneath a vehicle. She initially thought it was a cat, pulled out her phone and then watched one of Seattle’s most curious new residents trot into full view.
The mask-like face gave away the basics: this was a raccoon. The extremely compact body, shortened-looking neck and lively little gait supplied the mystery. Hall named him Jimothy simply because, in her estimation, he looked like a Jimothy. Honestly, no further paperwork was required.

The brief sighting quickly escaped the neighborhood and sprinted across the internet, attracting millions of views while other Seattle residents began sharing their own Jimothy encounters. Balcony footage, backyard appearances and earlier glimpses helped transform the round little night stroller into a full-fledged Ballard celebrity.
Wildlife experts who reviewed the footage said Jimothy’s unusual shape may result from a congenital spinal deformity similar to short-spine syndrome. A firm diagnosis cannot be made from social video alone, but his speed, alertness and ability to navigate fences and stairs suggest he has adapted remarkably well.
That does not make him a neighborhood pet or an invitation for amateur rescuers. Washington wildlife guidance recommends keeping raccoons wild: do not corner them, feed them or attempt to relocate them. Jimothy may look like Seattle manifested a pocket-size cryptid for summer, but the kindest fan behavior is giving him room to continue raccooning.
