The fire was reported at around 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 12, and caused an estimated £30,000 in crop damage. No one was injured, and the neighboring housing estate escaped property damage.
North Yorkshire Police said the fire is believed to have been deliberately started with a lighter. On July 17, officers announced the arrests of four 14-year-olds—two boys and two girls in connection with the incident. Two girls detained earlier, ages 15 and 17, are no longer being treated as suspects in this particular fire, though they remain under investigation over a separate fire reported later that evening.
Police publicly praised Jay and Cameron for acting quickly and courageously before firefighters arrived, saying their improvised firebreak helped limit the damage.
