Olivia Colman Orders Herself A Husband Made Entirely Of Wicker

Olivia Colman and Alexander Skarsgård are heading into deliciously strange romantic territory with Wicker, a twisted fable in which one lonely woman decides the solution to village life is commissioning herself a husband.
Written and directed by Alex Huston Fischer and Eleanor Wilson, the film follows a fisherwoman living on the outskirts of a seaside village. Mocked by her neighbors and tired of their small-mindedness, she asks the local basketmaker—played by Peter Dinklage—to build her a mate from wicker.
That handmade husband arrives in the form of Alexander Skarsgård, and naturally the unconventional romance sends the conservative town spinning into outrage, jealousy and chaos.

A Love Story Built From Willow, Defiance And Village Gossip
Black Bear describes Wicker as a fable about an unconventional romance that unsettles an otherwise conservative village. That setup gives the film room to operate as both fantasy and social comedy, with Colman’s character refusing the narrow life assigned to her and literally building an alternative.
The casting is exactly the kind of oddball combination this material needs. Colman can move from wounded to wicked in a single glance, while Skarsgård has long understood how to play beauty, menace and absurdity at the same time.
Peter Dinklage And Elizabeth Debicki Round Out The Fable
Peter Dinklage plays the basketmaker responsible for creating the wicker husband, while Elizabeth Debicki also joins the cast. Cinematographer Lol Crawley, whose recent work includes The Brutalist, photographs the film.
Rather than presenting the story as a straightforward fairy tale, the first trailer suggests something earthier and stranger: romantic longing mixed with bodily comedy, social cruelty and a handmade man who may be more appealing than anyone else in town.
Wicker is scheduled to open in theaters on October 23 through Black Bear.
