A Childhood Rhyme Turns Father-Son Grief Into Full-Body Dread
The deadliest killers cannot always be silenced—and apparently neither can the childhood rhymes they leave behind. Netflix has released thee debut official trailer for The Whisper Man, a new psychological crime thriller starring Robert De Niro, Adam Scott and Michelle Monaghan.
Based on the New York Times bestselling novel by Alex North, the film follows widowed crime writer Tom Kennedy, played by Scott, after his eight-year-old son Jake is abducted. Tom turns to his estranged father, retired police detective Peter Willis, only to discover that the disappearance may be connected to a serial killer Peter put away decades earlier.

The trailer wastes little time introducing the rhyme that has haunted the town for years: leave a door half open, leave a window unlatched, and the Whisper Man may come tapping. What begins as local folklore quickly becomes horribly immediate when children start disappearing again and the old case refuses to stay buried.
De Niro plays Peter Willis, the former detective forced back toward the investigation that defined his career, while Scott brings a more vulnerable edge as a grieving father trying to reach his son before it is too late. Monaghan stars as Amanda Beck, part of the renewed hunt for whoever—or whatever—is reviving the Whisper Man’s methods.
Director James Ashcroft, known for Coming Home in the Dark and The Rule of Jenny Pen, appears to be leaning into dread rather than cheap noise. The trailer is all shadowed hallways, whispered warnings, strained family history and that deeply upsetting idea that someone may be communicating with a child from just beyond the safety of home.
The supporting cast includes Hamish Linklater, Owen Teague, Acston Luca Porto and Will Brill. Written by Ben Jacoby and Chase Palmer, the adaptation also marks another collaboration between Netflix and the Russo brothers’ production company, AGBO.
The story may involve a notorious killer, but its sharpest hook is the damaged bond between father and son running through two generations. Tom needs Peter to help save Jake, even as old resentment and unanswered questions sit between them. That family tension gives the mystery more weight than a simple race against a monster in the dark.
