Britney and Christina Handed the Stage to Whitney
By September 2000, Britney and Christina were two of pop’s defining new stars — and both were already alumni of Disney’s The All-New Mickey Mouse Club, where they had appeared years before their solo careers exploded. Whitney, meanwhile, had already built the kind of career their generation was still chasing. MTV putting all three together for the ceremony’s closing award now plays like a snapshot of pop music passing between eras.
Once Whitney arrived, Bobby Brown joined her to present Video of the Year. The Moonman ultimately went to Eminem for “The Real Slim Shady.”
But before the winner was announced, the image was already locked into VMA history: Britney. Christina. Whitney. All standing inside the same MTV universe at the exact moment turn-of-the-millennium pop culture was exploding.
Twenty-six years later, it’s the kind of clip that doesn’t need much embellishment. The names do all the work.
