Monday Muse: We are entering the new week like Sabrina Carpenter making a surprise appearance during Madonna’s 2026 MTV VMAs performance — with zero hesitation, full pop-star confidence and apparently no interest in easing into Monday quietly.

Madonna opened the 2026 Video Music Awards with her first performance on the show in 23 years, and Sabrina joined her early in the set for “Bring Your Love,” their collaboration from Confessions II. It was one of those cross-generational pop moments the VMAs were practically built for: Madonna setting the stage, Sabrina stepping into it and the whole thing moving like one long knowing wink at pop history.

But That Look Had Us Thinking Christina Aguilera Immediately

One thing we have to take a moment to point out: Sabrina’s look feels very Christina Aguilera Back to Basics coded. We are not claiming Sabrina or her stylist confirmed that reference, but the visual connection jumped out at us immediately.

Specifically, the black-and-white suspender-and-beret styling brings us right back to Christina’s 2006 “Ain’t No Other Man” video, where Xtina slips into a black-and-white ensemble with a black sequined beret during the clip. That video was part of the full Back to Basics reinvention — Christina pulling from the 1920s and 1930s, old Hollywood, jazz, blues and soul, then twisting all of it into something modern and unmistakably hers.

Sabrina’s black-and-white styling immediately had INYIM thinking of Christina Aguilera’s Back to Basics era.

And Sabrina being linked to Christina is hardly random fan-fiction on our part. Carpenter has openly called Aguilera “one of my biggest idols”, and the two have already shared the stage for “Ain’t No Other Man” and “What a Girl Wants.” So when Sabrina shows up in this kind of retro-pop styling, of course our brains are going straight to Xtina.

Sabrina Is Doing What Christina Did Best: Remixing the Past

That is the part we like most about the comparison. Christina’s Back to Basics era was never about dressing up like it was literally 1932. She was taking visual and musical language from earlier decades and spinning it through contemporary pop. Sabrina has been doing a version of that same trick in her own lane — old-Hollywood femininity, retro silhouettes, knowingly theatrical staging and modern pop timing all living in the same frame.

So whether this was a direct homage or just two pop women drawing from overlapping vintage references, the lineage is hard not to see. Madonna onstage, Sabrina stepping in, Christina echoing through the styling — three different pop generations bouncing off one another in one VMA moment.

For a Monday Muse, that is more than enough inspiration for us: enter the week dramatically, know your references and wear the beret like you mean it.
