Leslie Jones Is Not Sure Conan Has Earned Friendship Status

Master comedian Leslie Jones side-steps over onto Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend—although she is not entirely convinced Conan has done enough to qualify as an actual friend.

That tension gives the conversation its perfect opening rhythm. Conan is searching for connection; Leslie is conducting a performance review. She arrives ready to laugh, argue, expose old grievances and make him work for every inch of friendship status.

Jones admits she feels conflicted about being Conan’s friend, which is exactly the kind of answer this show was built to provoke. She has affection for him, certainly—but affection does not erase the receipts.

Leslie Jones Has Standards For The Perfect Man

The conversation moves into Jones’ vision of the perfect partner, and naturally, the requirements are specific. She is not looking for a decorative accessory. She wants someone with confidence, emotional range, humor and enough backbone to survive being in a relationship with Leslie Jones.

The funniest part is that she treats romance like casting. The role is open, but not everyone gets a callback.

Kenan Thompson, Serial Killers And A Very Leslie Career Turn

Jones also talks about her longtime friendship with Kenan Thompson, one of the relationships that helped anchor her during her years at Saturday Night Live. Their connection has the ease of two performers who understand each other’s timing without needing to explain it.

Then the conversation takes the most Leslie Jones turn possible: she discusses her fascination with catching a serial killer. Not becoming one. Catching one. Apparently comedy, design television and amateur criminal investigation can all live comfortably in the same career plan.

Roast My Rental Gives Leslie Jones A New Kind Of Target

Jones also discusses her HGTV series Roast My Rental, which pairs her with renovation expert Jasmine Roth as they confront some of the country’s most disastrous short-term rentals.

The format is almost suspiciously perfect for her. Jones gets to say what everyone is already thinking about terrible design choices, misleading listings and spaces that should never have been photographed—then Roth and the renovation team attempt to rescue the property in 72 hours.

It is essentially property criticism with a deadline. Leslie roasts the rental, Jasmine rebuilds the evidence, and somewhere an owner quietly regrets installing carpet in the bathroom.

By the end of the conversation, Conan may not receive official friendship certification, but he does get exactly what every host wants from Leslie Jones: a loud, funny, unpredictable visit with no dead air and absolutely no safe topics.
