LA Priest Turns The Echo Into a One-Man Fase Luna Universe

LA Priest closes the Fase Luna tour at The Echo with an intimate one-man performance filled with guitar, electronics, falsetto and unpredictable musical turns.

Sam Eastgate brought the beautifully eccentric LA Priest project to The Echo for the final night of the Fase Luna tour.

From the beautifully eccentric with purpose, it is Sam Eastgate’s project LA Priest.

Formerly known for his influential late-2000s band Late of the Pier, LA Priest is an auditory rock journey that never strays too far from the dance floor.

We had the privilege of covering LA Priest’s Los Angeles show on Tuesday, December 5, 2023. The performance also marked the final tour date supporting the new album Fase Luna, released May 5, 2023, through Domino Records.

LA Priest’s third studio album, Fase Luna, was released May 5, 2023.

Fase Luna marks the experimental indie rocker’s third album, pulling much of its influence from the natural environments of Mexico and Costa Rica, where the project was recorded.

Showcasing his talent, Sam Eastgate performed with only a guitar in hand, a mixing box and his signature quirk for banter before a receptive Echo Park crowd.

Sam literally became one with the audience as he meandered from the stage onto the floor and back again. We say that closeness was much needed after spending the previous COVID years away from one another.

Although the sound of Fase Luna is more subdued and calmly restrained than LA Priest’s two previous albums, the songs still held everyone’s attention when performed live—as all great art should—with their unexpected musical tangents.

We must also mention that we were very impressed by Sam’s falsettos, which we would gladly hear more of any day of the week.

We had a stellar time, and it was a stellar performance from LA Priest on a rare, warm Tuesday night in December. Perhaps the weather itself was conjured by the sounds of Fase Luna.
