Ten Years Later, Ryan Gosling’s “La La Hand” Gets Its Redemption
That’s right! La La Land is turning 10, and Lionsgate has used the anniversary to correct the one tiny detail that has apparently haunted Ryan Gosling more than losing Best Picture after already walking onto the Oscar stage.
The studio’s updated poster fixes Gosling’s famously flat hand from the film’s signature dance pose with Emma Stone. His arm still reaches into the Los Angeles night, but the hand now continues upward instead of ending in thee limp little flourish he has spent years calling “La La Hand.”

Ryan Gosling Has Been Haunted By That Hand Since 2016
Gosling confessed in a 2024 interview that he chose the flattened pose even after people on set told him it was not working. He thought it looked cooler than simply extending his fingers upward. Then the image became the film’s poster, home-video cover and one of the defining pieces of artwork from his career.
“It just killed the energy,” he said while recreating the gesture. Once he learned dancers have their own phrase for stiff, lifeless positioning, the situation became even worse: “Hamburger hands Gosling over here.”
He later staged a playful repair with Rocky during the Project Hail Mary rollout, attempting the pose again with his alien co-star standing in for Stone. Lionsgate clearly received the distress signal.
The Original Poster Finally Meets Its Corrected Twin
The new anniversary artwork keeps the familiar golden-hour dance, Stone’s yellow dress and the Los Angeles skyline. The major historical revision is one hand—now lifted to mirror the energy of Stone’s pose instead of floating flat at the end of Gosling’s arm.

Not everyone is ready to wave goodbye. The awkward hand had become part of the poster’s charm—an accidental bit of camp preserved inside a movie already drunk on classic Hollywood movement. Fixing it gives Gosling the cleaner line he always wanted, but it also creates the possibility of a future Mandela Effect where somebody insists that wrist was never there.
La La Land Dances Back Into Theaters August 16
The correction arrives as writer-director Damien Chazelle’s musical returns to theaters beginning Sunday, August 16, including Dolby Cinema engagements at AMC. The anniversary gives audiences another chance to see Mia and Sebastian chase their Los Angeles dreams on the big screen—with all poster limbs now officially where Gosling believes they belong.
Released in 2016, La La Land earned a record-tying 14 Academy Award nominations and won six, including Best Director for Chazelle and Best Actress for Stone. A Broadway stage adaptation also remains in development, because apparently one corrected hand was never going to be the end of this city of stars.
