One of our New-Class R&B/Pop Queens, Kelly Rowland, pulled up a chair with Jessie Ware and her momma Lennie for the return of Table Manners — and somewhere between Southern comfort food, Destiny’s Child memories, motherhood and chocolate cake, Kelly came ready to testify about one very specific combination: waffle fries dipped into vanilla ice cream.

Kelly is here to attest that fries with ice cream are simply the best. Promises it is the best. But what sounds like a cheeky food confession turns out to be something much sweeter: it is one of the tastes she most closely associates with her late mother.

Southern Roots, Mom’s Fried Chicken and the Food Kelly Still Remembers

Born in Atlanta and raised in Texas, Kelly describes her food roots exactly how you would expect: Southern, comforting and built around the table. Mac and cheese, fried chicken, rice and peas and mashed potatoes all come up, but the meal she lights up over most is her mother’s fried chicken with mashed potatoes and English peas.

Her mother seasoned the chicken, let it sit, then worked it through egg and flour before frying it. Kelly happily admits fried chicken is not the dish she inherited. She is more comfortable with steak, salmon and whipped sweet potatoes — and talks through the home cooking she now makes for her own family.

Motherhood Changed the Way Kelly Thinks About Time — and Her Voice

Some of the most revealing moments have nothing to do with food. Kelly’s sons are now 11 and five, and she talks about watching her oldest get taller and hearing his voice begin to change while her youngest has just started kindergarten. She admits she cried after he walked into class with a casual “bye, mom.”

That awareness of time comes up again when Jessie asks about singing. Kelly says she works harder on her voice now than she ever has. After having children, she noticed changes in her upper range and says her voice became deeper and richer. She has changed keys when necessary rather than treating the original key as some sacred test of endurance.

She still trains the old-school way, including singing while working on a treadmill so her breathing holds up under performance pressure. Steam, hydration and vocal cool-downs are part of the routine too. For Kelly, preserving the voice is simply part of respecting the instrument.

London, Stevie Wonder and Destiny’s Child Memories Come Flooding Back

Kelly is spending part of her time in the UK for The Voice UK, and London still carries a strong hit of nostalgia. She remembers arriving around 15 or 16, doing Top of the Pops and suddenly finding herself in a whole new world.

That period also gave Destiny’s Child one of their first sushi experiences. At Nobu on Park Lane, Kelly was the one willing to taste the yellowtail first while the other girls waited for her approval. “Country girls,” as she remembers it — they liked their food cooked.

Her dinner-party playlist is equally revealing: Marvin Gaye, Donny Hathaway, Stevie Wonder, Earth, Wind & Fire, Miles Davis, jazz and hip-hop. Stevie sits on Kelly’s personal Mount Rushmore, and she says he also happens to have one of the best senses of humor she has ever encountered.

Hot Dog or Cheeseburger? Kelly’s Food “Dilemma” Is Serious Business

Because Kelly has a little song called “Dilemma,” Jessie and Lennie give her a food version: hot dog or hamburger? Kelly immediately understands the cruelty of the question.

Her ideal hot dog comes loaded with chili, cheese, onions, sauerkraut, ketchup, mustard and pickled jalapeños. The cheeseburger is just as serious: Kelly recalls one made by a friend’s chef with a pink center, caramelized onions, Gouda, a buttered bun and just the right amount of ketchup and mustard.

Her last-supper choices keep going with Greek salad and, naturally, chocolate cake. Kelly says she would eat the right chocolate cake every day if she could. She once balked at the price of an especially expensive one, then called back ten minutes later and ordered it anyway. Worth it? Absolutely.

Kelly Says She Stopped Drinking — and Likes How She Feels

The drink portion of the meal brings out another change. Kelly says she has stopped drinking alcohol. What began as trying one week became two, then six months, and she realized she preferred how she felt without it.

She still enjoys a mocktail, even if she laughs about how much sugar can end up in one. In her drinking days, wine was more her speed. These days, chocolate seems to be doing just fine in the indulgence department.

No, Destiny’s Child Has Not Been Planning a Reunion

Eventually Jessie asks the question that follows Kelly, Beyoncé and Michelle Williams into nearly every room: will Destiny’s Child perform together again?

Kelly’s answer is affectionate but clear. A reunion has not been something they have been talking about. She says she had just been with the girls, their children spend time together and they remain close friends. The relationship exists beyond whether three microphones ever appear on one stage again.

Kelly also says Michelle Williams keeps encouraging her toward theater. She regrets missing Michelle in Death Becomes Her on Broadway and says she would consider theater herself if the right role came along.

“When Love Takes Over” Still Sounds Like Summer to Kelly

Jessie also pulls the conversation toward one of Kelly’s greatest dance records, David Guetta’s “When Love Takes Over.” Kelly remembers hearing the track and finding it undeniable. The song grew out of memories of summers spent dancing until sunrise.

She remembers the writing process as unusually easy — words bouncing back and forth like a tennis match. Jessie then tops it with her own David Guetta memory: meeting him early in her career, only for him to tell somebody on the phone that he was sitting with Jessie J. They never wrote together. Kelly finds the whole thing hilarious.

The Fries and Ice Cream Story Ends Where It Began: With Her Mom

Near the end, Kelly comes right back to the waffle fries and vanilla ice cream. Her mother introduced the combination when Kelly was a kid. Kelly remembers looking at her like, what are you doing? Then came the instruction: taste it. Salty, sweet, done.

What stayed with her was not just the flavor. Kelly says sharing food with her mother was one of their love languages, and suddenly the whole fries-in-ice-cream headline lands differently.

So yes, dip the fry. Kelly Rowland has spoken.
