Talk Your Head Off is Kathy Griffin without the old TV filter
Talk Your Head Off has become Griffin’s direct line to the audience: a weekly YouTube show where she can bounce from current events to old Hollywood encounters, personal history and whatever celebrity memory suddenly deserves another airing.
That format suits her. Griffin has always been strongest when a polished celebrity moment turns into a story about what actually happened before, after or completely off camera.
And with a résumé stretching across stand-up, reality television, talk shows, red carpets and decades of celebrity friendships and run-ins, she has accumulated enough material to keep this thing going for quite a while.
A$AP Rocky and Kathy Griffin already have wonderfully weird history
The A$AP Rocky mention is especially fun because this is not some random celebrity name Kathy pulled from the week’s headlines.
Back in 2013, Rocky and Danny Brown appeared on Griffin’s Bravo talk show Kathy after their very public appreciation for the comedian became part of the joke. Later that year, Rocky and Griffin sat down together for Noisey’s Back & Forth series for an interview that was — very much in character for both of them — gloriously unfiltered.
So when Rocky resurfaces in Kathy’s storytelling more than a decade later, there is history there. Odd, funny, very Kathy history.
And then there is Shaq — because of course there is
Shaquille O’Neal also enters the latest round of Griffin recollections, another reminder of just how strange her celebrity orbit has been over the years.
That is really the pleasure of Talk Your Head Off: the famous name is only the door. Kathy’s version of the story — her reaction, the awkwardness, the joke she probably should not have made, the thing somebody said when the cameras were not supposed to matter — is usually why you stay.
