John Maus KEXP Session And Addendum Setlist
In beautifully enthralling music reporting on longtime INYIM favorite John Maus, our source over at Bebelabree.com/blog captures exactly why his work hits the beautifully strange ones in the chest.
The photographer wrote about spending years shooting sessions at KEXP, meeting musicians in that intimate Seattle in-studio world, and then getting the chance to photograph one of their absolute favorite artists: John Maus, whose music they describe as fun, thoughtful, dark, humble, and intense.
That combination is exactly the Maus zone. The songs can feel playful and haunted at the same time, as if the synths are throwing a private party in a haunted basement while the vocals are trying to wrestle a feeling out of the walls. His live presence only makes it more severe, more physical, and more real.
INYIM Night Shift
For the darkwave devotees, synth-pop obsessives, and beautifully intense music kids who know John Maus is never background noise.

The KEXP session comes out of Seattle, Washington, from January 23, 2018, and the photos tell the story without needing to oversell it: Maus locked in, pulled inward, and somehow still sending everything outward. The energy is part academic, part punk, part basement prophet, part man trying to sweat the truth out of a melody.
There you have it, honey rockers. And because you are our kind of people, we have the session tunes listed below by song title in sequence. Dig it out.
