John Maus is an American musician, singer, songwriter, composer, and producer whose austere synth-pop connects warped electronic textures with baritone vocals, post-punk tension, and medieval-inspired melodic modes. Born in Austin, Minnesota, Maus developed his solo catalog alongside work as a keyboardist with Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti and during associations with Animal Collective and Panda Bear. His albums include Songs (2006), Love Is Real (2007), We Must Become the Pitiless Censors of Ourselves (2011), Screen Memories (2017), and Addendum (2018). After a period focused on political philosophy and modular-s synthesizer construction, he returned in 2025 with Later Than You Think, extending his long-running interest in homemade electronics, emotional directness, and experimental pop form.
