Frenchy is back in the beauty-school chair—and this time, she is the one spilling the secrets. Didi Conn revisits Grease 48 years after the film’s release for a new edition of Entertainment Tonight’s Then & Now.

The original Pink Lady looks back at the casting accident that felt like fate, the strange little moments that became movie history and the friendship she built with Olivia Newton-John before audiences had even met Frenchy and Sandy.

Released on June 16, 1978, Grease turned Conn’s beauty-school dropout into one of the film’s most instantly recognizable characters. Frenchy was soft-hearted, slightly chaotic, forever experimenting with her hair and completely essential to the Pink Ladies’ chemistry.

Conn has explained that she went into the audition knowing little beyond the character’s name and her beauty-school ambitions. On the way home, she spotted a salon called Frenchy’s Beauty Parlor, went inside and emerged with a towering sprayed hairstyle plus enough salon knowledge to walk into the audition already carrying the character’s world with her.

The casting team later told her they knew she was Frenchy almost immediately. It is one of those Hollywood stories that sounds suspiciously polished until the person telling it is Didi Conn, whose voice, warmth and beautifully specific comic rhythm make the coincidence feel entirely plausible.

Her bond with Olivia Newton-John began just as naturally. Conn has recalled that Newton-John was nervous about beginning the movie, so she improvised with her before their first scene together—welcoming Sandy as Frenchy’s new Australian neighbor and giving her co-star an easy path into the character. Newton-John joined the game, the cameras rolled and the moment ended with a grateful hug.

That small act of generosity grew into a friendship that continued long after Rydell High’s fictional graduation. Conn has repeatedly described Newton-John as deeply kind, and her memories now carry the extra weight of losing her friend in 2022.

The interview also returns to the movie’s best-known transformation. Conn previously recalled that Newton-John first appeared in Sandy’s final black-clad look while the cast was working at night on the drive-in sequence—and for a moment, people on set did not realize who had walked among them. Danny Zuko’s stunned reaction may have been acting, but the shock surrounding that makeover had already started backstage.

That is the particular pleasure of hearing from Conn. She does not discuss Grease like a polished monument sealed behind glass. She remembers a working set full of nerves, improvisation, friendships, heat, laughter and people discovering in real time that something unusually durable was being made.

Forty-eight years later, Frenchy remains more than the girl with the pink hair and the Frankie Avalon fantasy sequence. She is the nervous friend who keeps everyone connected, the comic wildcard who never turns cruel and the character who made uncertainty look like its own kind of style.

Press play on everything this Pink Lady has to say. The jackets may belong to Rydell High, but these memories are completely Didi’s.
