Joseph Lally Sends Fashion Straight Into a Shakespearean Fever Dream

Joseph Lally takes us someplace far stranger than a standard fashion film with Earth Magic, his 2011 project for SHOWstudio.

The cast alone is enough to make this one an instant INYIM archive favorite: Daphne Guinness, Jamie Bochert, Sebastian Sauvé, Travis Hanson, Erik Sage, Kenzie Roth, Justin Passmore, Max Silberman and Petter Hedman. Instead of leaning on a conventional narrative, the film drifts through ideas of covert operations, brainwashing and Shakespearean fantasy — specifically A Midsummer Night’s Dream — with Lally pushing the whole thing into something much more surreal, theatrical and deliciously off-center.

There is plenty of beauty here, but Earth Magic is more interested in atmosphere than prettiness. Faces appear like characters passing through someone else’s subconscious, fashion becomes costume, and the imagery keeps sliding between glamour and something much more unsettling. Very 2011 SHOWstudio. Very much our kind of weird.
