Ryan Gosling sits down with Drew Barrymore to talk Project Hail Mary — when Drew suddenly appears as Gertie from E.T., sparking a chaotic, adorable, and totally surreal moment on set.
Ryan Gosling stopped by The Drew Barrymore Show to talk about his newest film, Project Hail Mary — but Drew had a surprise waiting that sent him straight back to childhood.

Mid‑interview, Drew announces, “We have someone here who came to join us…” and suddenly appears dressed as Gertie from E.T.— Ryan’s childhood crush. The wig, the dress, the whole scene. Ryan is stunned. Drew is giggling. And the audience loses it.

Then things get even wilder.
Drew introduces Rocky, the alien character from Project Hail Mary, who “calls in” from space to interview Ryan and Drew. Rocky greets them with: “Hello new friend Daroo. Hello old friend Ryan.” And from there, the chaos begins.
Rocky asks Ryan to scream like Gertie, critiques his technique, and even sends down a mysterious capsule containing a question — which Drew struggles to open, joking, “Righty tighty, lefty loosey… yes, that’s in the film.”
Ryan shares that the most special gifts he ever receives are from his daughters — tiny treasures they hide in his shoes and pockets. Drew melts. The audience melts. Rocky… does not understand human emotions.
Then Rocky demands a dance break, and Ryan — yes, Ryan Gosling — dances with an alien puppet on national television. Shoulders, shimmy, full commitment.
Rocky then asks why “many humans watch you together so long,” calling the audience “creepy,” which Drew quickly corrects: “Rocky, we don’t call the audience creepy.”
Finally, Rocky asks for a hug demonstration, referencing a moment from the film. Ryan and Drew share a sweet, slightly awkward, very Ryan‑Gosling hug. Drew jokes, “He’s not a big hugger,” and Ryan laughs, “When do you know a hug is over? You just know.”
It’s chaotic. It’s adorable. It’s peak Drew. Check it below!
