Christina Aguilera Stopped the 2006 VMAs Cold With “Hurt”
In one of her greatest awards-show performances — and yes, there are many — Christina Aguilera walked onto the 2006 MTV Video Music Awards stage with Linda Perry at the piano and proceeded to spellbind Radio City Music Hall with “Hurt.”
This was Aguilera deep in her Back to Basics era: old-Hollywood glamour, live instrumentation, giant vocals and absolutely no interest in scaling anything down for television. “Hurt” had not even been released as a single yet when she debuted it at the VMAs on August 31, 2006. The performance arrived as part of the massive promotional run surrounding Back to Basics, which had landed earlier that month.

And that is really the magic of this one. There is no giant stunt fighting for attention. No complicated concept swallowing the song. Perry opens at the piano, the arrangement swells around Aguilera, and Christina does what Christina does when everything else gets out of the way: she sings thee roof off the place.
“Hurt” Was Brand New — and Christina Sang It Like a Standard
Aguilera co-wrote “Hurt” with Linda Perry and Mark Ronson for Back to Basics. The song was built like something from another era — piano first, strings rising underneath it, then Aguilera’s voice going from almost fragile to enormous without losing the emotion underneath all that technique.
The VMAs performance was the song’s first live television performance, months before it would settle into the larger Back to Basics tour era. Perry’s presence onstage made the moment feel even more connected to the record itself rather than like a detached awards-show version.
The 2006 VMAs Were Built for Performances Like This
The same night had Justin Timberlake opening with “My Love” and “SexyBack,” Beyoncé detonating “Ring the Alarm,” Shakira and Wyclef Jean doing “Hips Don’t Lie,” Panic! at the Disco staging “I Write Sins Not Tragedies,” and The Killers closing out the broadcast. Yet Aguilera managed to command the room by doing almost the opposite: stand there, let the arrangement breathe and sing.
That is why the performance still lands twenty years later. It is glamorous without being overproduced, technically huge without becoming cold, and dramatic without needing to explain itself. The red gown, the orchestra, Perry at the piano and Aguilera’s voice all belonged to the same Back to Basics world she was selling at the time.
