The Real-Life Brother Rumor Finally Gets the Chelsea Handler Treatment

In promotion of Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson’s new Apple TV comedy Brothers, Chelsea Handler conducts a satirical interview that goes hilariously unhinged with the twosome’s very real brother rumors.
And really, Apple could not have handed Chelsea a better setup. Brothers has McConaughey and Harrelson playing fictionalized versions of themselves whose decades-long friendship gets thrown into chaos by one rather major family question: what if these two famous faces are actually related?

Yes, the Brother Rumor Actually Comes From Real Life
The joke lands because there is a real story behind it. McConaughey has previously recalled a family trip to Greece when his mother, Kay McConaughey, told Woody that she had “known” his father, Charles Harrelson. The way Matthew tells it, everybody at the table understood that “knew” was carrying a little extra punctuation.
After comparing family timelines, the longtime friends realized there was at least enough overlap to make the possibility worth wondering about. But despite years of talk, resemblance comparisons and Woody’s enthusiasm for getting answers, there has been no public DNA confirmation that Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson are biological brothers.

Apple TV Basically Built an Entire Comedy Around the Question
Brothers, which premiered on September 23, 2026, takes that unresolved real-life curiosity and runs with it. The eight-episode comedy follows fictionalized Matthew and Woody after a long-buried family secret suggests their friendship may have a biological explanation after all.
The first two episodes debuted together, with one new episode arriving every Wednesday through November 4. Lee Eisenberg serves as showrunner and executive producer, while McConaughey and Harrelson both star and executive produce. Holland Taylor plays Matthew’s mother, Ma Mac, with Natalie Martinez, Brittany Ishibashi, Nolan Almeida, Ella Grace Helton, Noah Carganilla, Highdee Kuan and Oona Yaffe rounding out the ensemble.
The premise also folds neatly into a friendship that already feels almost suspiciously family-sized. McConaughey and Harrelson have known each other for decades, worked together on EDtv, Surfer, Dude and most famously the first season of True Detective, while their families have become close enough that the “are they actually brothers?” question has never really gone away.
Chelsea Handler Does Exactly What Chelsea Handler Should Do With This
Enter Chelsea, who treats the whole thing with exactly the amount of seriousness a possible secret-Hollywood-brother situation deserves: not very much. The satirical setup lets Matthew and Woody lean straight into the mythology around their friendship while promoting a series that is already doing the same thing.
Dig out whether or not these two famous faces are indeed real-life family! Or, at the very least, watch Chelsea turn the question into one very entertaining interrogation.
