One Mustache, One New School and a Very Awkward Coming-of-Age Crisis
Atharv Verma and ’90s icon Alicia Silverstone star in Mustache, writer-director Imran J. Khan’s warm, awkward and very specific coming-of-age comedy about trying to survive public school while wearing the one thing on your face you absolutely do not want there.
Set in mid-’90s Northern California, the film follows 13-year-old Pakistani-American Ilyas, who gets pulled out of the Islamic private school where he feels comfortable and dropped into public school just as his insecurities are reaching maximum teenage volume.
And sitting right in the middle of all of it is the title problem: an inescapable prepubescent mustache that Ilyas desperately wishes would simply mind its business.

Ilyas Has a Plan to Get His Old Life Back
The setup is wonderfully simple. Ilyas wants out of public school and back into the life he already understood. His solution is to hatch a plan that might get him returned to his old school — except the bigger problem is not really the school at all.
It is the familiar teenage terror of being seen before you have figured out who you are. The mustache becomes the perfect symbol for that feeling: impossible to ignore, impossible to hide and attached to a kid who would very much like the world to stop looking at him for five minutes.
Alicia Silverstone Steps Into Ilyas’ Very Complicated School Year
Silverstone plays Miss Martin, while the family and supporting cast includes Rizwan Manji, Meesha Shafi, Ayana Manji and Hasan Minhaj.
The film also arrives with some serious comedy pedigree behind the scenes. Producers and executive producers across the project include names such as Riz Ahmed, Christopher Storer, Hasan Minhaj and Ramy Youssef, while Dan Romer composed the score.
Still, the story belongs to Ilyas. The whole point is not that somebody swoops in and fixes adolescence for him. He has to figure out how to stop treating his own face like the enemy.
Mustache Took the Long Road From SXSW to Streaming
Mustache first premiered at SXSW in March 2023, where it won the festival’s Narrative Feature Audience Award. After that early festival run, the film finally reached a wider audience when Quiver Distribution released it digitally on July 31, 2026.
So yes, this one technically spent a few years waiting for its broader rollout — but now it is finally out where people can actually find it.
Between the specific cultural details, the old-school setting and the very universal humiliation of being 13, Mustache has a premise that sounds tiny until you realize how much teenage life can fit inside one tiny insecurity.
