James Brown was an American singer, songwriter, bandleader and performer whose rhythmic innovations transformed soul music and helped create funk. Raised in the American South, he first broke through with The Famous Flames and “Please, Please, Please” before becoming one of the most electrifying live performers of the 20th century. Records including “Papa’s Got a Brand New Bag,” “I Got You (I Feel Good),” “Cold Sweat,” “Say It Loud – I’m Black and I’m Proud” and “The Payback” established grooves that became foundational to hip-hop, R&B and dance music.
